Restoran Traditional Home of Dessert @ Kimberley Street

Again we are back to Restoran Traditional Home of Dessert (汕头街四果汤) at Kimberley Street. This time we reached before 7pm in order not to miss the almond soup or hen jing th'ng again.

After ordering our the soup with fried crullers, we happily got a seat and wait for our soup. Even though it was still early , the shop was fully occupied and I saw many tables having almond soup too.

My girl : "Many people drinking the almond soup leh... must be very nice..."

Me: " Hanor.. should be gua.."

While waiting my girl spotted some cute mini egg tarts. We ordered a plate. Then she spotted pineapple tart. So I got her another piece. The mini egg tart come in 4 for 1 set. Very cute as it was about 50cents' size big. Too bad it taste very normal. The pineapple tart on the order hand was very fresh, the filling was not too sweet and just right with the crumbly pastry.

Mini Eggtart

Pineapple Tart

We saw a aunty holding a tray of freshly baked pastry. The strong aroma of the pastry made my girl kept eyeing on the tray, wondering what was that. The aunty was noticed that and asked whether we want to have one.

Aunty: " Ai boh? sio sio eh.. jin jia ho chiak..."
My girl: " hammi lai eh?"
Aunty: " o tao soh"
My girl : " wo ai ji leh.."
Aunty: " ho.. ho.."

The fried yam pastry was still fresh and hot. It's outer layer was still crispy, fluffy and rich and the filling was oozing with aromatic yam paste. Very delicate snack.

Here came the almond soup. We were so excited but after the first sip of it, our excitement were gone,  what replacing were moments of silence.

Indescribable taste.
Now we kind of understood the meaning of " the soup smelt like cockroach " as reviewed by some food bloggers. I had never tasted any cockroach before (* well I don't think I'm gonna taste it though) but the soup had a very unpleasant smell and taste. It was so unappetizing and having a few more spoonfuls of it make us want to throw up.

The soup was actually milky, tasted like soya with a hint of sweetness. It was alright but there was a very, very pungent taste in it which was very unacceptable for us.  But I heard some people like them a lot, but no us. It was really something that either you " like it or hate it" dessert.

Dipping the fried crullers into the soup did not make it taste acceptable still. I would not say that the soup was not good, but it was not my cup of tea. The almond soup was being abandoned in the end and I ordered another bowl of sweet soup.

Cheng Bou Liong (清补凉)

Hmm.. this one taste more acceptable with longan, lotus seed and bak goh. Just the ice occupied 2/3 of the bowl. A very refreshing and cooling soup but not worth the price I paid for.

There was Sky Emperor Chicken Feet Koay Teow Th'ng stall near to the tong shui shop. My girl wanted to had their braised chicken drumstick as they look so tempting. But she ordered only koay teow th'ng with braised chickn feet at last.

The koay teow th'ng was pretty average. It was just another bowl of clear soup noodle with smooth koay teow to me. But the braised chicken feet was a bit hit. The chicken feet was very flavorful due to the long hour braise with juicy, tender and succulent texture.

Well, we tried almond soup at last. But we did not like it. I think the only thing that I liked was only the braised chicken feet and pipping hot fried yam pastry. We were very full but we continued hunting down Cintra Street for bak tong gou and ham jin peng.

Kek Seng Coffee Shop @ Penang Road, Pasembur @ Persiaran Gurney

People said it is a must to try out ice kacang and home made durian ice cream at Kek Seng Coffee Shop when travel to Penang. Yea we did, and felt so cheated. We will not step into this shop again and will not recommend anyone to go there as they have no quality control over their ice kacang. The shop is not doubt getting famous especially among tourists but they make me feel like they are more into making money than to provide good refreshing ice kacang and durian ice cream.

Delicious and tasty? Not even tasted average.

The bowl of ice kacang was topped with jelly, red beans, sweet corns, durian ice cream and sugar drizzle.
Okay, the "ice" kacang came half melted. Half of the ice was melted by the time it reached our table. The ice was so coarse and tasted so awful, with the smell of  tap water. The durian ice cream was also half melted, not nice, and lack of durian taste.

Pie Tee

Luckily we ordered some pie tee. Not to say very delicious but the presentation earned some points from us, and ease our dissatisfaction towards the ice kacang. The pastry cups was still crispy and warm with shredded mengkuang, beancurd, eggs and garnished with chilli sauce. Nice to see, nice to eat.

We went to Gurney Plaza for some shopping afterwards but there was nothing to buy. By 5pm we was a little bit hungry. But the day was still early and we wanted to keep our stomach for dinner at Kimberly Street. My girl suggested to go Gurney Drive Hawker Center for some Pasembur at stall 61.

Once reaching the stall, she saw a wide variety of base ingredients to choose from such as prawn fritters, fried bean curd, fish balls, fish cake, fried octopus, fried crab, etc. etc. She humbly pick only a piece of prawn fritter, bean curd, fish cake and handed it over to the stall owner. He helped to cut those ingredients into smaller size, top with some shredded cucumber, drenched with some orange-ish sauce, handed back to her and say : " RM7 ". " So expensive ... ", uttered in her heart and made the pay.

The RM7 pasembur.

The end product of the pasembur looked a little unpleasant but tasted very nice. The thick orange-ish sauce had a combination of sweet, spicy and nutty taste. Tantalizing. We should have opted for more sauce.

My girl: " Tasted like a mix of chilli sauce and tomato sauce. "
Me: " Anor..but very nice "
My girl : " Next time I will try to mix the two sauces at home and see what will I get. "
Me: " =.=||| "

We ordered a bowl of laksa as we cannot bear with the nice laksa aroma. Not sure which laksa stall the aroma came from, we just simply order a bowl. We liked the spicy and sour soup with sweetness from fish, as it not only warm up the stomach but also stimulated our appetite.

We were half fulled after finishing the laksa and pasembur but this didn't stop our trip to Kimberley Street for almond soup. Yeah yeah...

Cintra Food Corner @ Cintra Street, Leong Chee Kee @ Off Cintra Street, Penang

After having delicious breakfast at Soon Yuen Coffee Shop, we made our way down to Cintra Street to have some tasty bak chang, yam cake and red bean soup at Cintra Food Corner( 槟城日本街肉粽茶餐室). At first I thought of driving there as the weather was very hot but we were afraid that we might not be able to get a parking, so we just walked there.

Sometimes the destination seems to be so far especially when you are walking under the hot sun. And complains will come in. XD.

Me : " At where ooo... why so far... very hot neh..."
My girl: " erm... yea lo... very hot. Almost reach le gua.. suppose to be along this street."

It was easy to spot the shop as it has a big shop sign and big banner hanging beneath it, making it stand out from other shops. I guessed the big banner provides some shelther to the shop? hehe..

Cintra Food Corner specialized in dumpling (bak chang), but their famous yam cake (o kueh) and red bean soup (ang dao th'ng) are not to be missed too. There were few kinds of dumpling such as Cantonese dumpling, Hokkien dumpling, golden dumpling, etc.

Hokkien Chang (RM3.50)

We liked our Hokkien chang. The rice had the right stickiness and infused with the flavor of dried shrimp, salty egg yolk, juicy fatty meat, and chestnut after hours of steaming.

Yam Cake

The yam cake came in quite a big plate even though we ordered for a small portion. The yam cake was not flourish, soggy and tasteless like many other places, instead it was well-textured with chunks of cubed taro. The garnishing of dried shrimp, peanuts, spring onions onto the yam cake gave an extra flavor to the simple snack.

My girl said their sweet and spicy sauce was very nice, homemade I guessed. In the end I was having the dumpling while she was having the sauce, and she almost licked the whole plate clean. =,=

Red Bean Soup

The soup was mellow, soothing, with pleasant tangy taste due to the adding of sun-dried mandarin orange peel to the soup. Partial of the red beans were simmered till soften but still hold in shape, giving the soup an extra munch. A good bowl of red bean soup which we did not mind having it in a hot weather.

We made a turn into Leong Chee Kee (梁池记饼家) later to buy some traditional biscuit, as we came here on Sundays last time and was welcomed with big closed doors.

The shop was located at the corner lot of People's Court ground floor which was quite hidden but no doubt famous for traditional Cantonese wedding biscuits such as walnut biscuit (合桃酥), yello bridal biscuits (黄陵蓮蓉酥), red bridal biscuit ( 红绫豆沙酥) and egg cake (鸡蛋糕). They also have fabulous pepper biscuits and coconut tart as well.

Egg Cakes

We bought some egg cakes back home.

A first bite of it we found that it had a boring taste but my girl just couldn't stop munching it. She said it was very nice and addictive. The nice she meant was not flavorful or any other fancy taste but just the "koh cha bi" (古早味) that brought back the good old memories she had in hometown.

Afterall, our sweat was paid off with simple yet lip smacking morning tea with some good venture to traditional wedding biscuit shop, I will come back again if there is any chance.

Soon Yuen Coffee Shop @ Jalan Kuala Kangsar, Penang

We were in Chowrasta Market, or commonly known as Kelinga Bansan by Penangnites one Saturday morning. We wondered why Penangites called market(pasar) as Bansan.. >__<.  Anyway, we were there looking for pok cheng(薄撑) sold by one poh poh. We walked from end to end of the market twice but still failed to found the stall. Not giving up, we walked around for one more time.

My girl: “Poh poh ON LEAVE ha?”

Me: “ Don’t know leh… maybe finished selling and went back liaw?

Feeling so hungry, we gave up at last and moved to Soon Yuen Coffee Shop beside the market for their famous koay teow th’ng and wantan mee. Wantan mee was served to us very soon with the price of RM2.80. The mee was very springy with a light sweetness, a taste which I had been looking for, very similar to the one I ate at Klang. The mee was two thumbs up but the wantan was a let down.

We waited quite long for our koay teow th'ng. A second remind to the stall owner only to realize that that had forgotten our order. The koay teow thn'ng tasted normal to me but I like the homemade fishball which were fresh and springy.

After breakfast, we had a walk around the market and bought a small packet of mua chi. I did not know how to differenciate a nice or bad mua chi but my girl said it was " not nice at all ".

Start driving to Penang from KL at 4.30am and ended up not getting to had poh cheng was a big dissapointment. I will give myself another chance to look for it when I come to Penang at the end of August. Keep my finger cross.

Tao Buffet @ Sunway Giza Shopping Mall

Tao ala-carte buffet, a place that no need further introduction. When Tao opened a branch in Sunway Giza Shopping Mall, we were so thrill with it and planned to have a trip there. We mentioned about it over and over again for about a year, but we never go there even once. =.=

We missed their 50% promotion last year, so this year we were not going to miss it again. And we went. My girl was born in May so she was entitled a 50% discount for dining there during May.

Upon sitting down, the waiter asked if this was our first time there. We answered yes and he started to introduce us with their top 10 dishes in a very high speed. He spoke so fast that we actually didn't know what was he introducing but just nodded and agreed to have all the top 10 dishes. He is well trained and we thought he has potential to be a good salesman. We then hopped around to have a glance at the place while waiting for the so-called top 10 dishes.

BBQ Bar

Cold Cuts Bar

Sushi and Sashimi

Salad Bar. Not impressive at all.

Dessert Bar. Miserable varieties.

Chocolate Fountain. Hmm... at least this one made me happy a bit.

Here comes their top 10 and other food that we ordered:

Shimeji Bata Yaki

Kaki Hiroyaki

Motoyaki Scallop

Abalone

Lamb Teriyaki

Abalone Soup

Soup of The Day

Taiwanese Mantis Prawn

Bamboo Clam (Seasonal)

Prosperity Shrimp

Tempura Moriawase

Yaki Udon

Drunken Chicken

Skewered Prawns

Sushi and Sashimi

Shishamo Katsu

Unagi Mushi Tofu

Age Gyoza

Eryagii Mushroom Yaki

Steam Gyoza

Nasu Denggaku

Tebasaki Shioyaki

Mango Shrimp Roll

Steam Hamaguri

Ice-cream

Gui Leng Gou, Jelly and Green Tea Cake

Cheese Tart, Cream Puff, Mini cake and Jelly

To sum up the buffet, I would said that it was just average. The service was good but the food was just alright, and the dessert was a total dissapointment as both my girl and I love buffet with wide array of eye catchy desserts and ice-creams.
